George Will touts Warner.
I don't have much use for George Will, for obvious reasons, but he is a heavyweight among pundits and widely-read and syndicated. In fact, I saw this article on the op-ed page of my local paper, the St. Petersburg Times. In it, Will makes the case for Warner as someone the Democrats should look to in 2008:
An exhortation that echoed here 140 years ago -- "On to Richmond!" -- may soon be heard from Democrats wandering the country in search of a path out of the political wilderness. They will trek to Virginia's capital to take the measure of Mark Warner. One interesting bit in the article is this critique of the Kerry campaign:
Concerning the Democrats' current fretfulness about cultural or "values" issues, Warner laments that Kerry "never broke from Democratic orthodoxy on any issue. Your base will always hold you to an orthodoxy standard."Quite true. Kerry never did have a "Sister Souljah" moment in the campaign. It probably wouldn't have been enough anyway, but it couldn't have hurt.

4 Comments:
Meet the Press discussion on Sunday moved into analysis of how Dems could appeal to pro-lifers and John Harwood/WSJ mentioned Warner's success in Virginia as a Dem gov of a red state in favor of parental notification. Relevant excerpt, if you're interested:
MR. RUSSERT: Could they entertain the possibility of parental notification with a judicial bypass where minors would go to their parents for consent before an abortion or would they entertain perhaps a third-trimester, some restrictions?
MR. HARWOOD: They can look at things like that, and Mark Warner, for example, governor of Virginia, somebody who Democrats look at as having survived a red-state election and done very well appealing to culturally conservative voters, is for parental notification. Those are the kinds of things. But when you get down to Roe v. Wade and whether or not abortion rights are going to be generally and widely available, they're not going to change on that issue.

Thanks for the MTP excerpt, Bobby. If Warner does run, it will be interesting to see how he finesses his position on parental notification so as to not alienate NARAL etc., and still be viable in the primaries. Clinton was able to make hay with the "safe, legal and rare" mantra. This issue will be a test of Warner's political skills.
