The LA Times' Ron Brownstein is one of the nation's foremost and influential political reporters, and in his where-do-the-Democrats-go-now column of yesterday gives our man a mention:

Warner of Virginia (the South).(emphasis added)Brownstein's mentioning of Warner was even noted in The Note, ABC News' uber-insider political daily. The mention of Warner by Brownstein and The Note will undoubtedly further raise his profile within what the Note likes to call the "Gang of 500", the political and journalistic elite who shape political news coverage.

There was a poll recently on dailykos where Mark Warner placed third among 12 potential democratic candidates for 2008.
You can see it here.
I voted for him and this is what I wrote:
- A Southern governor.
- Warner got the urban, suburban and rural vote.
- He also got most of the African American and Latino vote. Fluent in Spanish.
- Strong family and religious values.
- Fiscal conservative, VA is again doing reasonably well. He got republicans and democrats in Richmond to agree on balancing the budget and they passed quite a bit of his agenda.
- Strong on education and health care issues
- Mark's story is similar to Edwards'. Humble origins, first one in his family to go to college, self-made businessman.
- His weaknesses in foreign policy could be mitigated by including in the ticket someone like Bill Richardson or Wesley Clark
- How do we start a "Warner for President" campaign?
I am glad you got this blog started.
I agree that Warner can be an appealing candidate to Southern and other red state voters. And more importantly, like the Moose implied, he can make a major contribution to the DNC in developing the much needed new crossover "message" or "narrative" that was so badly lacking during the past election.
The main question in my mind is what happens between the end of his tenure as governor and the 2008 presidential campaign. As the last campaign seems to show, not holding a US senate seat and having a voting record can be a real asset in running for the WH.
I don't know much about Mark Warner, but he seems to be a great option. As a moderate democrat from the south (GA) but living in the liberal north for school (MA), I see the divide. The red states see the blue states as over-educated, pompous and unrealistic. In the opposite manner, here in the liberal northeast, being from the conservative bible belt is seen as backwoods, bigotted and gun happy. I think Warner would be great for those of us who try to bridge that gap -it would be nice to have some help.
However, I don't see much about him anywhere that talks about his spiritual life. I think the democratic key is God. Not to use God as a ploy for success - far be it. I think if more democrats dug into spiritual matters though, they might relate more to the bible belt mentality (that those of us that are from the south know, love and believe). Do you know where Warner stands on this other than the fact that his site lists him as a presbyterian?
We do need a candidate who is not afraid to talk about god. The fact that Kerry didn't even win the catholic vote is inexcusable. Kerry may be on the wrong side of the abortion issue, But Bush was on the wrong side of the death penalty and Iraq issues and that didn't hurt him.
As for starting a Warner for President Campaign, we can't. We can start a "Draft Warner for President" campaign. That's how Wesley Clark entered the race, I was a part of it. The guy who was really behind that was John Hlinko. He also ran a site called "Act for Love". Get up with him, he can give you the 411.
I'm looking into Gov'r Mark Warner and his tax reform plan from up here in Washington State. See, I get rather worked up when people spend MY money without good reason - and seeing the picture of the late President Reagan speaking in front of Congress about the budget this week flashed on the wires gives me an idea: Maybe Warner should announce his Presidential bid by waving around the last one... with hands covered in the red ink he spilled line-iteming out the pork...
Then he can explain explicitly why he broke the no-taxes-pledge, step-by-step and why he had no choice so the GOP has nothing to throw at him. Why the other option wasn't just a bond rating but the future of his state, for starters.
That said, I too want a Gov'r Warner bid for the Presidency (if fellow New Democrat U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell won't bite). US Senator Hillary Clinton is nothing more or less than a beautiful target for the right wing. I don't get all their reasons why - but if you think Kerry got hammered, you just wait.
Finally, I have enjoyed reading this blog and the hyperlinks from it. The case just gets stronger and stronger... I think you should let Gov'r Warner have your phone # to be his official blogger.
